Dalyan Travel Guide
Beach, delta, Kaunos, boats, transfer and seasons.
Dalyan, Muğla
Dalyan is a small town on a river that winds through a reed delta into the Mediterranean. A protected nature reserve since 1988. Twenty-five minutes from Dalaman airport, and wrapped in its own green quiet.
Eight kilometres of fine sand between the Mediterranean and a freshwater lake. Protected and barely built on. Thirty minutes downriver by boat, or twenty minutes overland by dolmuş. In summer there are sun loungers, a café and basic facilities — the rest is silence.
Iztuzu is one of the last nesting grounds for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean. Parts of the beach are closed at night from May to October. The little turtle clinic near the lodge is worth a visit — and grateful for every guest who turns up.
A Carian harbour city from the 4th century BC. The famous Lycian rock-cut tombs are visible from Dalyan itself. A ten-minute crossing by rowing boat, then half an hour through olive groves to the excavations.
Upriver, on the shore of Lake Köyceğiz. Hot sulphur springs and mud pools known since Roman times. Half a day, best early in the morning. We'll arrange the boat.
Dalyan sits on the Köyceğiz river, which winds through a reed delta to the sea. A boat day is essential: past the rock tombs, through the reed channels, on to Iztuzu and back via the mud baths.
Seen from above, the setting explains itself: the pool at the heart of the garden, palms and fruit orchards all around, and a quiet lane leading towards town. The lodge sits in the protected landscape on the edge of Dalyan — about 2 km from the centre and harbour, a 20-minute walk or a few minutes by bike or dolmuş.
Inside the protected area the nights stay properly dark. Our rooms are deliberately television-free — evenings belong to dinner in the garden, tea by the pool and a sky full of stars, with the planets easy to spot on a clear night.
